United Utilities has partnered with Xylem to deploy 330 Flygt Concertor intelligent pumping systems across north-west England as part of a major investment programme aimed at reducing combined sewer overflow (CSO) spills by 60% by 2030. The rollout forms a significant part of the utility's environmental improvement strategy and will support approximately 77% of its CSO enhancement programme.
The Flygt Concertor combines a wastewater pump, intelligent controls, and monitoring capabilities into a single integrated solution. The system automatically adapts to changing operating conditions, helping to deliver clog-free performance, automated cleaning functions, lower energy consumption, and a reduction in unplanned maintenance and reactive callouts.
Results from water companies already using the technology have demonstrated substantial operational benefits, including 13-40% reductions in energy usage, 85% reductions in spare parts inventory, and up to 93% fewer reactive site visits. Many organisations have also achieved a return on investment within a year thanks to lower operating and maintenance costs.
United Utilities selected the technology following extensive evaluations and site visits. The partnership with Xylem highlights how intelligent pumping solutions can improve wastewater network performance, reduce environmental impact, and deliver long-term operational savings for UK water companies.
